It was February of 2021, in the depths of the COVID lockdown. Tom and Darius had their first date over FaceTime after matching on both Hinge and Tinder. To make it seasonal they planned for a “sweater weather” theme with spiked hot cocoa. However, someone [Tom] forgot about the theme. After a quick wardrobe change and several refills, they realized they had been lost in conversation for more than five hours. Taking this as a good sign, they planned a second date taking a stroll around Harvard Square. In the interim, Tom found a $20 half-buried in the snow and brought it with him. He suggested they find a way to spend the $20 on their date, and so they headed to the Raven Used Books store that was on Church Street at the time. They each picked a book for the other. For Darius, Tom selected a book about the goddess Aphrodite. For Tom, Darius chose a book on consciousness. These totaled $19. They ended the date with a kiss on the Weeks Footbridge. They still have yet to spend that last dollar.

Dating during COVID required a little creativity - picnics in the park, watching Netflix together over zoom, and outdoor dining in the snow. As the world re-opened, Darius and Tom finally got to meet each other's friends and families. They spent a weekend in Ogunquit, Maine, went on their first white water rafting trip, attended their first post-COVID concert, and in the spring of 2022, they graduated from BU–Darius with his Master’s in Genetic Counseling, Tom with his PhD in Computational Neuroscience.

In Provincetown in August of 2024, Darius and Tom shopped for engagement rings at Exuma, a lovely jewelry store on Commercial St. When the rings finally came in the mail that November, Tom and Darius went on a walk to their spot on the Weeks Footbridge. The rest is history.
